VMware announced Thursday that version 3.0 of its Fusion virtualization software will include support for iPhone OS virtual machines.

Available in the next public beta, the added functionality is a result of recent changes to the iPhone software license agreement, which allows users to run multiple copies of iPhone on a single piece of PC or Mac hardware, provided that users acquire an individual license for each copy.

In fact, VMware says Fusion 2.0 will run many copies of iPhone on brawny Mac hardware — like Xserves or Mac Pros — as long as there is RAM to support them. The virtualization software itself will support up to 8GB of memory per virtual machine.

Alternatively, users can simultaneously run a mixture of server operating systems, such as the combination of Windows Server 2003, Linux, Mac OS X Server and iPhone OS. This capability will be particularly useful for cross-platform developers, VMware notes, because they’ll be able to run Xcode and Visual Studio on the same machine, compile, and then test the software in multiple virtual operating systems that are running as virtual machines.

Running multiple instances of iPhone OS should also help developers shave time off their debugging procedures. Instead of tinkering with configurations and settings to reproduce a quality assurance tester’s system, they’ll be able to simply copy the tester’s virtual machine, quickly reproduce a bug, write a fix, and then use Fusion’s ‘roll back to a snapshot’ function before testing again.

Here is data from Dev-Team Blog:

BASICS

The unlock works exclusively with baseband 02.28.00. This baseband is provided by the latest firmware update (2.2) from Apple. You’ll need to upgrade to this release using iTunes and then use QuickPwn to activate etc. There are plenty of tutorials about this on iclarified, bigboss, modmi and other established tutorial sites. Because it works on 02.28.00, it is available to everyone on the planet. This means we don’t need to unnecessarily expose holes in earlier basebands, which is an important concern.

The application is a small daemon that is launched on boot. It injects the payload at boot and also whenever there is a baseband reset. You won’t notice anything about it other than that your third-party sim now works. It’s a small program and unobtrusive. There is no GUI (this is by design).

You can add the application using the sources outlined below. There are Cydia and Installer sources available, so use whichever you are comfortable using.

yellowsn0w is completely removable through Cydia, the command line, and iTunes.

DETAILS

There is a known issue with SIM cards that have STK (SIM Toolkit) application menus. These menus are usually items such as “top up” “get credit” “lotto numbers” etc. These menu items confuse the application sometimes. Removing and reinserting the SIM once after reboot (give it about<strike></strike> 60 seconds (with v0.9.1) after you see the slide to unlock widget) fixes this issue. We’re working on a better fix. Update: version 0.9.4 fixes this for many (but probably not all) users who previously had to wait a minute and then replug the sim.

For those of you using SIM cards without STK menus, the application has some optional arguments that will make the unlock much faster for you. So either experiment on your own (use “yellowsn0w -h” for usage) or wait for a customization writeup.

After you install yellowsn0w via Cydia, you should return to the Cydia main menu then reboot your iPhone with the 3rd party SIM installed. Wait for the slide to unlock screen, then wait 10 or 15 secs more. If you don’t see your carrier name pop up, then remove your SIM, reinsert it, and wait 10 secs more. This is the step we’ll be working on eliminating next.

RANDOM

The application is version 0.9.4 This is considered beta software, you use it at your own risk. You know the score.

The application is released on a non-commerical basis. Please do not accept pirates and scummy ripoffs of this software. We license this software for single use and in a non-commerical environment (meaning you can’t charge for it). The techniques and methods used are not to be used by third party companies. We are watching you Jody…we won’t be so forgiving this time.

Direct linking to the repository URLs is prohibited, please only link to this post. We will be checking referers.

Happy 2009 and enjoy!

The iPhone 3G is used all over the world with all sorts of SIM cards, and we almost certainly will see untested and unexpected situations. If the soft unlock doesn’t work for you on day 1 (literally day 1, of 2009!) then please don’t panic or be impatient. This is new territory for everyone, so enjoy the ride as much as you can

At the Flash On The Beach (FOTB) conference in Brighton, Sr. Director of Engineering at Adobe Systems Paul Betlem, confirmed that Adobe is indeed developing a Flash Player for the iPhone. However, Apple calls the shots as to when it’ll be available.

The Town Hall meeting sessions are usually a great source of Adobe information and the one at this years Flash On The Beach conference was no exception. The session was full of nuggets for Flash users, but the most relevant piece of information for others was about Flash Player for the iPhone. Upon a direct question from the audience, Paul Betlem for the first time publicly confirmed that Adobe is actively developing a Flash Player for Apple’s popular phone. He said (not direct quote) “My team is working on Flash on the iPhone, but it’s a closed platform.” He noted that Apple makes all the decisions, so in other words, the ball is in Apple’s yard at this time. If Apple says yes, Adobe will have the player available in a very short time.

After an interview with Adobe CEO Shantanu Narayan, the rumour mill got into high gear. Now we know that the Player exists within Adobe. Apple may have many reasons for not allowing Flash onto the iPhone, but if anyone has a good shot at getting their technology into the device, it would be Adobe. There were several other nuggets in this session, but we’ll get back to those in our FOTB conference reports.

Google Announces launch of iPhone Application

Today, Google announced the release of a new iPhone application that integrates its multiple services into a single interface, making it easy for iPhone users to find, use and switch between Google search, Gmail, Calendar, Reader, and more. To use the application, iPhone users simply point their web browser to http://www.google.com.

To accomplish this, Google is taking advantage of browser technologies (like AJAX) that made Gmail and Google Maps possible on the desktop. In supporting these advances in web technology, the iPhone’s Safari browser not only delivers an excellent mobile Internet experience; it enabled our product and engineering teams to create an optimal Google experience on a mobile device.

Google’s overall goal is to provide users with access to information, wherever they are. This commitment is device-independent, and we are working to develop new mobile technologies that are faster, easier to use, and available on more devices. A recent example is My Location (http://google.com/gmm/mylocation.html), a Google Maps for mobile feature that shows users their location directly on the map with or without GPS. To see the full range of mobile products and services available from Google, visit http://mobile.google.com.

If you’d like to learn more about today’s announcement, Google’s mobile initiatives or if you need screenshots, please let us know — we’d be happy to help.
